Are You Getting the Right Omegas?

Omega-3 Questions and Answers

You might be taking supplements to get more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Or maybe you’ve heard talk in recent years about how important these nutrients are in our diet. But how do you know if you’re taking high-quality supplements, or if you’re taking enough?

Two Omegas, Two Different Effects

First, let’s talk about what omega fatty acids are. They can be found in supplements or food. Many people take them to fight off inflammation and decrease their aches and pains. Omega-3: Found in wild-caught salmon, tuna, krill and other fish, eggs, certain types of nuts such as walnuts, kale and broccoli. This fatty acid:

  • Helps with inflammation
  • Improves brain and heart health
  • Accelerates your body’s healing processes

Omega-6: A different type of fatty acid than omega-3. Found in corn, vegetable oil, sunflower seed oil, cottonseed oil, farm-raised poultry and farm-raised fish. Omega-6s do the opposite of omega-3s by being pro-inflammatory. The detrimental effects of this fatty acid include:

  • Clogged arteries
  • Decreased immune system
  • Altered brain chemistry
  • Slower metabolism

Finding the Balance

Your body needs both types of omega fatty acids. What we need to watch out for is getting the appropriate ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. A good ratio to follow is one part omega-3 to two or three parts of omega-6.

Surrounded by Inflammation

The problem with today’s diet is that omega-6 can be found everywhere — in meats that aren’t wild or grass fed, chicken that’s not cage-free, and in soy products and popcorns made with cottonseed oil. Some people can have a ratio that’s as high as one part omega-3 to 10 or even 25 parts omega-6! This high ratio means that our bodies have a lot of inflammation to fight off.
