Sciatica

sciatica reviewHave you ever felt a radiating, numb, or sharp pain that goes from your lower back, through your hips, and down to your toes?

You could be dealing with sciatica, a condition that’s typically caused by one of three problems that affect your sciatic nerve.

At Dudum Chiropractic, we’re proud to work with patients of all walks of life to help them overcome sciatic nerve pain naturally, without the need for surgery, medications, or injections.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition that can be caused by a herniated disc, bone spur, or muscle strain. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, and when it becomes compressed or irritated, it can cause pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.

The three main causes of the condition include:

Herniated discs – Can occur when a disc slips out of alignment and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. Our team has had incredible success utilizing non-invasive spinal decompression therapy to help the discs rehydrate and get back into proper position.

Joint or pelvis misalignment – Typically causes inflammation or pinching in the area, leading to sciatica. One of the best solutions for this type of sciatica is gentle, focused chiropractic adjustments delivered with extreme precision.

Piriformis syndrome – Also known as piriformis dysfunction, this happens when the piriformis muscle is experiencing too much stress or pressure, leading to problems with the nerve. If this is your diagnosis, we’ll focus on specific stretches and exercise as well as myofascial release therapy to help relieve pressure and improve function.

Diagnosing Sciatica

We’re proud to use specific diagnostic techniques to determine exactly what’s causing your sciatic nerve pain so that we can get to the root cause of your issue and help you get back to living and loving life.

We may recommend x-rays or an MRI to get the best look at what’s really going on in your body. From there, we’ll develop a care plan that fits your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sciatica be treated without surgery?

For most patients, yes. Sciatica is usually a symptom of something pressing on the sciatic nerve — most often a herniated or bulging disc, or spinal narrowing. Relieve that pressure and the sciatica typically resolves. At Dudum Chiropractic we use non-surgical spinal decompression on the DOC table to take pressure off the nerve at its source, without injections or surgery.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica is nerve pain that radiates from the low back through the buttock and down the leg, caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. The most common source is a herniated or bulging disc in the low back (L4/L5, L5/S1) pressing on the nerve root; spinal stenosis and disc degeneration can also cause it. Because it’s a symptom, the key is treating the underlying cause — not just the pain.

How does non-surgical decompression relieve sciatica?

Because it addresses the cause. The DOC table lets us set a precise angle and target the exact disc that’s compressing the nerve, opening space at that segment so the disc can retract and the pressure on the sciatic nerve comes off. When the nerve isn’t being compressed, the leg pain, numbness, and tingling settle down. Our patient outcomes are documented with MRI-confirmed disc reduction in peer-reviewed research published in the *Journal of Contemporary Chiropractic*.

Will sciatica go away on its own?

Sometimes mild sciatica eases with time, but pain that’s severe, keeps coming back, or comes with numbness or weakness is a sign the nerve is still under pressure — and that tends not to resolve on its own. Ongoing or worsening leg symptoms are worth getting imaged and evaluated rather than waiting them out.

Is non-surgical spinal decompression safe? Does it hurt?

It’s gentle and non-invasive — most patients find the sessions relaxing. We start from your MRI and adjust the settings to your condition, so the treatment is matched to what’s actually compressing the nerve. We’re one of the largest non-surgical spinal decompression centers in the country, with over 50,000 treatments performed.

Can you help with severe or long-standing sciatica, or leg numbness?

Often, yes. We regularly work with patients whose sciatica has lasted months or years, or who have numbness and weakness in the leg, including those who’ve tried injections or been told surgery was the only option. We’ll review your history and MRI to determine whether decompression is a fit before recommending a plan
